When I had to scrap cold butter in the morning i was going nuts, I hated that. Friend of mine recommended me a butter keeper. Butter keeper is a small thing made from porcelain.Usually the are neat small jars. The are not too expensive you can find ones for $5. How it works, you fill it with waterr and it creates the seal keeping air away from the butter. Of course you have to change the waterr from time to time. History of butter keepers is very long, people in previous century used to but butter in waterr to keep it fresh for a longer time. But this method was good to keep butter for a week not longer. In norpro keeper you can keep butter for almost a month.

Silicone oven mitt

One of the best things I have ever bought. It’s heat resistant up to 500 degrees F.Hot pot is not a problem now.It’s really easy to wash it.You can put it in a dishwasher so it takes minutes to clean it. And what happens when you spill boiling hot waterr on your hand ? In normal mitt waterr would soak but not in silicone one. It will save you from hot oil if you are a fan of Chinese food. It’s very hygienic because it’s made from silicone.Some people used to say that it ’s not too comfortable but until you can buy three fingered ones that is not a problem.

If you want your kitchen to be modern and safe I really recommend you this stuff because for me it works great.

Hardwood floors, old or new, can last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance.For example, some pre-cut hardwood floors come with an almost permanent finish and it is best not to use a floor cleaner at all.  To be safe, it is always best to take your questions to the pro at the store.  These good folks can provide excellent care tips and steer the less experienced homeowner away from products that can cause problems.

Well, I do not know anything about how exactly a Westie would get along with an Iquana or a Guinea Pig, but I’ve got a wealth of understanding of Westies and cats..

When Willow came to us last summer one of the things that she needed to adjust to was a household already inhabited by three tomcats ranging in age from four years to over ten. The cats definitely rule the roost here and the new little Westie just was required to find her place. She’s done that now. There are actually occasional spats to decide who’s top dog/cat on any given day, but that’s normal and the cats jockey backwards and forwards amongst themselves whether the dog is there or not.

We weren’t just dropping a dog in the midst of a bunch of cats who had never seen a dog before. Our Norwegian Elkhound, Saladdin was a key part of our family structure for years and actually helped raise two of our cats from kittenhood. He’s gone now and the cats haven’t had to handle a dog for a while, nevertheless the  old habits were still there. They weren’t overjoyed to acquire a brand new dog to contend with, especially an energetic pup, but it really wasn’t the end of the world for them either.

One thing that Marilyn and I insisted on from the beginning was that a new dog had to submit to the cats. This is especially true when dealing with terrier dogs like the West Highland Terrier. It doesn’t matter how lovable and cute they are, deep down within their heart and soul they are hunters. They need to get in and duke it out with game animals, and more or less anything that runs away from them qualifies as game. It does not mean they aren’t great dogs, but there is no way around it: the terrier breeds from Pit Bulls all the way down to Yorkies are scrappers. So our job as owners of terriers is always to define the things they can chase and fight with and what they can’t.

That is why I was so strict about making Willow submit to the cats from the start. It wasn’t hard to do. If she got too frisky we were required to lay her down until she settled and calmed, but mostly a sharp word along with a tug on the leash was enough to do the trick. It certainly helped that our cats are not particularly impressed by dogs and don’t mind demonstrating the use of their claws if she gets too feisty.

Things have settled into place now and we’ve been able to relax some of the boundaries we laid down at the start.  We have chases in the house now, up the stairs, around and down. Its equally likely for Willow to be chased by a cat as it is for her to chase one. Actually it is apparently more of a game of tag than anything else, and nobody gets hurt. When they aren’t chasing one another around the house its not unusual to discover Willow curled up with one of the cats, or just hanging out on the windowseat with one. And, you can never tell which two animals are likely to bond. Our oldest cat, Whiskey, was the 1st to actually chase Willow (I think she pissed him off, to tell you the truth) and that set the stage for the others to follow.

Your position may be quite different from ours, because our cats were already used to having a dog around. If the cats haven’t had anything to do with dogs, you will probably want to follow a rather different course. In a case like this I would recommend keeping the new Westie on umbilical for a couple of days while the critters get accustomed to each other. Umbilical training, where you have the dog on a long leash and keep the leash tied around your waist, is a very good training method under any circumstance. It gives you control of the situation without having to hold the leash, or even pay much attention to the dog. Stick to the umbilical work for at least seven days and keep the dog in its crate when it isn’t on the leash. The cat will quickly settle down once it realizes the dog is not really a threat to it.

Similar things apply if you wish to introduce a cat to the house. I’d recommend a kitten when possible, due to the fact they are more malleable which can make the situation more managable. Be sure that the dog and cat get to sniff each others butts so that you have the nose engaged, then keep your dog on umbilical for a while.

Cats can definitely coexist with Westie Terriers. They may not become buds the way our animals did, but peaceful respect for each other is certainly possible. Use the umbilical, make the dog submit from the beginning and everything will be well.
